Diplomats of Consulate General of the United States in Shanghai visited ANU

Accompanied by Ms. Zhang Ying, deputy director of Foreign Affairs Office of Anqing Municipal, Ms. Koscina,dean of Public Relation Department, Mr. Patch, Vice Consul and Ms. Grossman, Visa Official of Consulate General of the United States in Shanghai visited our university on October 24th, 2013.

ANU held a welcome meeting with three diplomats. Mr. Pan Kaiyan, deputy director of Foreign Affairs Office made a brief introduction to the history and the development of Anqing Normal University . Then he made a detailed presentation about the international communication program with three partners in USA , including Salisbury University , Augsburg College and University of Minnesota , especially about the 3+1 and 2+2 dual degree programs with Salisbury University . Other attendees, who are deans of schools also explained amply the international communication program with American universities. Ms. Koscina expressed her appreciation and amaze to the results. Meanwhile, she met John and Brett, the exchange students from Salisbury University and enquired their daily life on our campus.

After the meeting, Ms. Grossman gave a speech about American higher education and visa application to over one hundred and fifty students and teachers delegates. Ms. Grossman explained American education , the difference between American education and Chinese education and the main body of international students in USA . Meanwhile, she introduced the policy of visa and the main types of student visa. When she mentioned the visa application and interview, she said, “In the visa process, all we will do is to find out you are a real student. It is not a test, and there is no right or wrong answer. It is just a conversation. So, the best is to be honest.”

A question and answer session was held after the speech, by Ms. Grossman and Wu Jian(Johnson), who had taught Chinese two years in USA as a volunteer. Students felt less worried about the interview after the imitating visa interview. Ms. Grossman answered all the questions thoroughly and left everyone a deep impression with his cordial smile and witty language.
